Alonissos: the eco-paradise
Alonissos is one of the last eco-paradises of the Mediterranean, ideal for fishing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking and diving. But Alonissos has much more to offer: natural beauty, a unique ecosystem and geographical diversity. It belongs to the group of Sporades Islands. Its coastline stretches for 67 km. Alonissos is separated from Skopelos and Pelagonisi by Alonissos and Pelagonisi Channels respectedly.
A bit of history
Alonissos is a place of old shipwrecks confirming its geostrategic significance, ancient cities lost in the sea and mythical heroes. In antiquity it was called Ikos and comprised two cities probably located near Kokkinokastro, where the ruins of ancient walls are still to be seen. At different times it was conquered by the Romans, Franks, Venetians and Turks.
How to get there
You can get to the island by ferry from Volos, Agios Konstantinos and Kimi. There is no airport on the island so you can fly to the neighboring island of Skiathos and Skiros.
