Bauska is the city with a population of over 10 thousand people, located 66 km from Riga.
Bauska was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1443, it became a city in 1511, and received the full rights in 1609.
Bauska Castle - a massive fortification built by the Livonian Order around 1443. Now there are preserved walls and one of the five towers of the fortress. Bauska is very popular from tourists also because it is 12 km from the city is Rundale Palace - famous work of Rastrelli. The palace was built under the project and under the personal guidance of an outstanding architect Rastrelli 1736-40. Here lived Biron - a favorite of Queen Anna Ivanovna. Later, Catherine the Great gave the palace to her favorite Platon Zubov. The palace is constantly being renovated, and opens new premises for visitors, now it is exhibited an Exhibition of Decorative Arts "From Gothic to Jugendstil (art-nouveau)". Gorgeous park which also the designed by great architect has been also restored.
