Charming Lefkada
Lefkada is one of the most beautiful islands of the Ionian See with beaches such as Porto Katsiki and Eggremnoi. Although Lefkas is an island, it's connected to the mainland by a causeway and a floating bridge. The airport at the north tip of the island is a 20 minute drive from Lefkas Town. Lefkada has a 117 km long coastline, impressive landscapes, traditional villages, Byzantine churches, archaeological sites and perfect conditions for wind surfing.
Lefkada is all about ladies: it's said to be the birthplace of Greek goddess of beauty Aphrodite and the suicide site of the poet Sappho, who had flung herself from the cliff of Cape Lefkada.
Lefkas Town
Lefkas Town will definitely charm you with its narrow streets, blooming balconies and genuine island flavour.
A Bit of History
Lefkada owes its name to the white rocks ( lefkos in Greek means “white”) that characterize the southern part of the island, Lefkada Cape. The Corinthians colonized the island during the 7th century BC, built the new town of Lefkas and started the construction of the canal that separates Lefkada from the mainland in 650 BC, turning Lefkada into an island. When the Franks conquered Constantinople, in 1204, Lefkada fell under their domination and then under the Sicilian rule in 1294, when the bishop Nikiforos Angelos gave the island as a dory to his daughter who married Giovanni Orsini. Until 1331, Lefkada was ruled by the Orsini Family, who built the Castle of Agia Mavra.
During the English domination, the Greek language became official, new road networks were built and water supply was improved. On the 21st of May 1864, a treaty was signed proclaiming the unification of the Ionian Islands (including Lefkada) with the newly born independent Greek State.
Cuisine
Lefkada produces agricultural products of excellent quality: olive oil, citrus, honey (thyme), grapes and the wine Bertzami - the best wine in Greece. Apart from the wine, you can taste aromatic liqueurs, such as: rosoli, mint and rose, as well as nonalcoholic almond drink, called soymada.
Among Lefkada specialties are spicy sausages and salamis, savoro (fish cooked with garlic, onion and rosemary), aliada (fish dish), traditional ladopita, sweet snacks (madolato, pasteli).
