Oinousses Islands
Off the south coast of Messenia lie the Messenian Oinousses islands. The largest of them are Sapientza, Schiza and Venetiko.
A Bit of History
According to legends, Ancient Messinia was inhabited by Lelegs. According to Homer, the mythical kingdom of Nestor, with the center in Pylos was situated in Messinia. After long wars with the neighboring Sparta, which was seeking domination of the entire Peloponnese, Messinia fell under its authority. After the victory of Thebes over Sparta, it regains its independence. In the 1st century BC, Messinia became part of the Roman province of Achaia.

Two of the best varieties of olives in the world are grown in Messenia: Koroniki, of which the olive oil with a delicate flavor, rich aroma is made, and Kalamon – vey juicy table olives.
